On Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at approximately 8:00AM, the Southern Regional Police Department received a complaint of a fire hydrant being open in the unit block of Singer Road.

Upon arrival of the police it was discovered that some unknown actor/s removed the 4 inch cap from the hydrant and had turned on the hydrant. The public works department was contact the hydrant was turned off. An investigation conducted by the New Freedom Borough Public Works Department showed that 125,000 gallons of water had been wasted, and the hydrant was running for approximately 3 hours before being reported.

The investigation also showed that the water storage tank that services that end of the borough had dropped approximately 12 feet. There were also reports made to both the Borough of New Freedom and the police department by residents that they experienced lost of water pressure in their homes. It was reported by the officials of New Freedom Borough that if a major fire would have occurred at the time this hydrant was running and the lost of water pressure, fire services could have been hampered greatly.

The Southern Regional Police are asking anyone having information to contact the police department, and or the Borough of New Freedom. Additionally anyone seeing anyone tampering or hooking up to a fire hydrant other then a fire truck should contact the police department right away.
