A New Freedom Borough resident called the police after receiving a telephone call from a subject claiming to be from UPS. The caller stated that a package would be delivered to his residence the following day and at approx. 3 o'clock.
The resident contacted police because he was not expecting a package and felt that something didn't seem right with the call. The resident contacted UPS via their eight hundred number and explained the call he had received. UPS stated that the number provided was not one of theirs and that they do not call before delivering packages. A search of the provided number showed that the phone number originated in Jamaica. After contacting the number provided we were asked for a receipt number which we did not have. The subject stated that $199.00 needed to be sent to an address in Jamaica and that a receipt with all of the information would be sent and after receiving the receipt the package would be delivered. At this point the subject was informed that we were the police and asked for him to stop calling the resident. The subject stated that it was all right because he helped the FBI. The subject eventually agreed to stop calling. The Southern Regional Police wants the public to be aware of scams such as this and to remind them to not send money to people they do not know or for items that they have not purchased. If anyone has had similar calls recently please contact their local police department. |
